Intern Appreciation

Intern Appreciation

Heading Home partners with Boston College’s Social Work program and hosts students for a year-long immersive internship experience working with Heading Home clients and learning from our staff. During the 2022-2023 school year, we had the pleasure of working with two incredible interns who supported our Clinical Services department. Megan and Savannah just finished up their first year of graduate school studying social work at BC.

During their year-long internship with Heading Home, Megan and Savannah worked closely with Senior Director of Programs Mary Shannon Thomas, LICSW, and got a firsthand view at some of the complex mental health challenges our clients face. When asked about her favorite experience at Heading Home, Megan said “working with Mary Shannon and learning so much from her – it’s more than what I’ve learned in school.” Additionally, she mentioned that it was a great learning opportunity to see clients’ resilience and strength as they work on their goals and succeed. Savannah agreed, saying her favorite part was “seeing the behind the scenes of how the whole shelter system works, and being a part of that as Mary Shannon’s intern.”

Our internship program strives to provide students with the experience they need to excel post-graduation. From her internship, Savannah learned that she wants to be in a more client-facing role but that Heading Home was a good fit for what she wants to do long-term with her career. Megan had had no previous social work experience or with people experiencing homelessness. As she wrapped up her internship, she felt like she can “work with any population after this field placement.”

We are so grateful to these incredible interns for all of the amazing work that they did at Heading Home, and we are excited to see what comes next for them! Thank you, Megan and Savannah!
