Up & Out is Heading Home’s signature volunteer program which pairs groups of volunteers with clients who are making a milestone move from shelter into permanent housing. Typically, this half-day experience involves two stages. The morning begins with the team prepping the apartment – cleaning, furnishing and personalizing to the family’s taste and transforming the apartment into a “home.” The morning concludes with welcoming the family members and presenting them with keys to their new home. This “moving” experience has a consistently high emotional impact for volunteers and clients alike. Heading Home continues to serve diverse groups, ranging from single persons to large families; Up & Out coordinates moves to homes of all sizes throughout Greater Boston. Volunteer participants also vary widely, from corporations to families to civic groups. In the past year, Heading Home volunteers successfully completed more than 20 Up & Out moves.
Specific ways to participate in Up & Out:
- Full participation
- Coordinate a group of friends, family or co-workers to sponsor and participate in a move
- Partial participation
Under normal circumstances, Up & Out moves take place on Saturday mornings, as most of our clients work during weekdays. However, upon request, we are occasionally able to accommodate weekday morning requests (typically Fridays). There are several steps involved in coordinating an Up & Out move, including scheduling the move date, the meet and greet with the family, and other pre-planning.
