Overview Client Background Location Contribute Inventory Volunteer Contact

On Friday, November 14th TJX volunteers will be participating in Heading Home’s Up & Out Program. This is a meaningful, hands-on opportunity that assists once-homeless families move from shelter into a permanent home. An Up and Out volunteer group raises money and household donations to outfit and decorate the new home. Part of the experience includes meeting the family the week before the move in order to understand what they are looking forward to most in their home (e.g. favorite colors, a child’s favorite toy). The actual move consists of cleaning and furnishing the apartment. The half-day experience concludes with welcoming the family home for the first time and presenting them with the keys to their new apartment.

  • Donate either used or new housewares to the move (e.g. glasses, towels, cleaning supplies, furniture).
  • Volunteer on the day of the move to clean, assemble furniture, buy groceries, etc. Most importantly, be there to welcome the family home for the first time!
  • Contribute funds to the move to help pay for items that must be purchased new (e.g. beds and linens).

Client Background

Franchesca and her 6-month-old daughter Franjeisi have been working with Heading Home since May 2014. Franchesca and Franjeisi became homeless due to a difficult pregnancy in which she was unable to work, with no income she could no longer afford her bills or rent. With nowhere else to go, she was referred to Heading Home.

Immediately following her referral to Heading Home, Franchesca was placed in one of our shelters. Since then Franchesca has worked closely with our employment specialist team on her job search, resume and interview skills. Franchesca has also received intensive support from our financial literacy experts who helped her develop a plan for monthly budgeting, savings and improving her credit score. Currently Franchesca is employed as a houskeeper at a local hotel. Once settled in her new apartment, she is looking forward to completing her GED so she can pursue a more advanced career path. Franchesca cannot wait to be living in her own home and looks forward to meeting more of her goals.

Helpful Information

  • Average cost to move a family is $4,000-$5,000 if all items are purchased new; cost can be offset by donations of gently used items.
  • Most of the items below can be collected prior to knowing the family moving. At the "meet & greet," the family’s preferences will be learned to help personalize the home.
  • Typically Up & Outs take place in 1-2 bedroom apartments; number of bedrooms varies depending on size of family, but plan on at least one child.
  • Electronic devices (e.g., televisions, computers) are welcomed, but not required.
  • Any items you do not use at your move can be donated to Heading Home for another family.
  • On the day of the move, don’t forget a general tool box (hammer, level, tape measure), picture hangers and sparkling cider and paper cups (for the toast as we welcome the family into its new home!).
