Leaving a bad experience in another city behind, Priscilla and her three young children came to Boston for their fresh start. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, Priscilla’s family found themselves homeless. Shortly after being referred to Heading Home, Priscilla and her family were swiftly placed into one of our transitional housing units.

Our case manager addressed the family’s immediate needs, including child care, the children’s access to school and transportation. Through this process, we recognized Priscilla’s potential and encouraged her to enroll in the Heading Home Partnership. As a result of several positive steps in her work, skills and savings, Priscilla recently secured permanent housing for her family in Roxbury.

She is currently pursuing a nursing degree from Lincoln Technical Institute and is on-track to graduate next semester. In the meantime, she has secured full-time employment as an advocate for homeless families with disabled children. As someone who never thought she would be without a home, she has embraced – and accelerated with – the support Heading Home has provided to get back on track.

After her husband left, Rosaura faced having to support her two school-age sons as a single mother. Struggling to get a job because she wasn’t fully fluent in English, it became harder and harder for Rosaura to afford rent. Eventually, Rosaura and her sons lost their home. After being placed in transitional housing, Rosaura was referred to Heading Home.

As her son Manuel said, “This is when our lives began to turn around.”

As her son Manuel said, “This is when our lives began to turn around.”

Through their Heading Home case manager’s support and guidance, Rosaura enrolled in the Heading Home Partnership, which began with a job training program at Roxbury Community College, along with ESL classes. After four months, Rosaura’s family moved into a permanent home in Dorchester, close to where her boys attend school. Thanks to Heading Home’s Up & Out program, a group of volunteers decorated and furnished their new home. Since the move, Rosaura has secured full-time employment as a home health aide and is actively saving each month.

She is grateful and amazed with how far they have come, and this makes her want to achieve even more for her family.
